A Stewardship Devotional
Open Handed Generosity
“There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore… be open handed toward… [the] poor and needy…” — Deuteronomy 15:11
We cannot fully appreciate our poor neighbors’ circumstances; therefore, we should not judge.
Instead, the presence of poverty calls to us offering an opportunity to demonstrate open handed generosity. Jesus reminded us of this Old Testament law telling his disciples, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
A closed hand is not friendly. It is a fist. It represents an attitude of calculation, one of grasping. The well-to-do among the Israelites were told not to calculate, not to hold back on lending to the poor as the seventh year drew near.
Instead, they were to give generously and to do so without grudging hearts. This, they were told, would honor God and that they would be blessed.
An open hand is an offering hand. It says, “Welcome.” It says, “Peace be with you.” No wonder this was the symbol for charity chosen for us in Deuteronomy. We receive open handed from our Creator and Sustainer. Therefore, we should openly offer back a measure.
Extend an open hand and be blessed.
