Good Folks, it is Friday, September 8, 2017. Hurricane Harvey has come and gone, but not really. The hurricane’s mark will be remembered for many generations to come.
A week plus days ago, I received a call from David Ralph. Some remember him as the son of Brad and Donna. He was an Eagle Scout, an active member of our youth group. He is currently a student at University of Texas-Arlington. He said, “Pastor Frank, I want to go down to Houston and help with the hurricane relief efforts.” I said, “What can I do to help you?” he responded, “A place to go where they are doing this.” I got his contact information. I then contacted a colleague and friend of mine at Kingwood UMC, Scott Dornbush. Long story short, David made the connections. He saw firsthand the devastation in that area.
I write this to say how proud I am of David and the nudging that God placed in his heart to go, on “his own nickle.” He worked with other folks from the church and community. I believe that David’s life has been nurtured by parents, scouting, the church and folks that encouraged him to think of others in time of great need. I know of one other person from our church family that went down to help family and friends in the Corpus Christi area—Corrie Barnes.
We will never know the full impact of what our influence will be on our children, youth and individuals that journey with us called the church. I do know that I am proud of David Ralph and Corrie Barnes. There are many more folks that will go un-named and un-mentioned during these days of hurricane repairs and even “resurrection.” There will be others who will be so nudged by God to do the extraordinary, to go and risk… and to not really know what lies on the road down there to help. Our role is to empower, support and pray that God will continue to do miracles through them.
A few pictures that David took while in the Kingwood area of Houston. Pictures of water donations by Linda & Ricky Hodge and hurricane relief items by many church members. Soli Deo Gloria.
Blessings from Duncanville, Pastor Frank
