Good Folks, it is Friday, September 27, 2019. Today begins our PIP Days weekend (Property Improvement Program). Betty Dunn and many others have worked to prepare the church and community for another double weekend of a labor of love for some Duncanville residents.
This Sunday is Commitment Sunday (aka: Stewardship Sunday). It is an annual ritual in most congregations to give the Finance Committee a glimpse of what the projected income might be for the following year. But it is really much more than that. It has to be.
Our financial support of the church as a spiritual disciple is not hastily made. It is thought through, lots of prayer and faith, that when we sign a pledge card of what we believe would be our tithes and offerings to the mission and ministry of the church.
First United Methodist Church of Duncanville has been a faithful witness of the saving grace of God in this community since 1883. The church is in its third sanctuary and has been the place for worship, Baptisms, where the Sacrament of Holy Communion is served, celebrations of life services occur, Quinceañeras, and a host of community events. Yet it is more than this. All of this is what God is doing and we are part of it.
Scripture shares with us an element of stewardship: The earth is the LORD’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it: Psalm 24:1 (NRSV)
Every one of us have been given a responsibility of entrustment: spouse, child(ren), employment, health, finances and the list is very long. Whenever we realize that all that we have and all that we do is a gift from God, it is entrusted to us for this season in our lives. I will be the first to admit that I need God’s help to take care of what God has generously given me. Edna and I support this church joyfully and prayerfully.
Sunday is a time to take a step of faith. You are invited to remain faithful. You are invited to start. Years ago I heard these words: Christ meets where we are and leads us to where we need to be. Open your hand so that Christ will hold on to yours.
Reminder: You are ALL invited to the 5th Sunday Covered Dish Meal in Aldersgate after worship this Sunday. The Stewardship Committee will be providing the entree. Please bring a vegetable, salad or dessert to share!
Blessings from Duncanville,
Pastor Frank (email@example.com)
