Good Folks, it is Friday, December 9, 2016. Only 15 more days until Christmas Eve, where you are invited to participate in any of the three services offered: 6PM-Traditional (Sanctuary); 8PM-Contemporary (Aldersgate) & 10PM-Traditional (Sanctuary). All are candlelight services, with the singing of Christmas carols from the hymnbook, special music and the making of memories.
Lest I forget, tomorrow is the Christmas Gala that begins in the sanctuary at 6PM, with a concert that Betsy Stelzer Lippens has prepared for all in attendance to enjoy. Afterwards, folks will be going to Aldersgate to have a meal served by our youth, hear some more Christmas music and finish the evening with Stephanie Schroeder singing “O Holy Night” followed by the Chancel Choir & Youth Choir singing “Go Tell It on the Mountain.” WOW! Spectacular music, fellowship and meal. Proceeds for this part of the gala go towards the Youth Choir Summer Mission Tour. Donations are always accepted. Contact Betsy.
In the midst of the singing, eating of great food, many worship services between now and Christmas Day (which happens to fall on a Sunday this year) let us not forget the “reason for the season.” Let us never forget that many will have their first Christmas without a spouse, son or daughter, a parent or a person that meant so much to them.
Many will feel lonely and alone. No one should feel either way. Invite someone to join you, share a meal, a cup of coffee with a bagel and strawberry crème cheese (now that’s delicious). Invite someone to church this Christmas Day, 10:30AM, one service.
The poinsettias are in the sanctuary, ready for you to purchase in honor or memory of a loved one. I have already purchased one, in memory of treasured family members.
My first recollection of a Christmas Eve service was in my home-church, El Buen Pastor UMC, The Good Shepherd UMC, in Corpus Christi, Texas. I remember the candles lit, songs sung in Spanish, and leaving the sanctuary with a brown bag of fruit, nuts and candy. I treasure those memories. I remember when Edna would make some bunelos (fried flour tortilla sprinkled with cinnamon-sugar mixture). Delicious!
Folks, make memories that will last a lifetime. Come and sing songs of God’s story of Christ becoming our story, so that we may share God’s story with others.
Praying that God’s grace bless each of you in the reading of this epistle. Now go out and make a difference, do a random act of kindness, send a note of appreciation to someone that is long overdue, and be generous.
Blessings from Duncanville, Pastor Frank
