I was perusing Facebook yesterday on the wonderful day off that Memorial Day provided, when I came across an interesting quote.
“You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.” – C.S. Lewis
I enjoy C.S. Lewis’ writing style, and I found this quote particularly apropos, given the nature of my day off. When I found this quote I was taking a break from reading a great novel and enjoying a cup of tea. I don’t normally drink tea, well hot tea at least, but I have recently grown fond of it. Emma was making a cup of tea the other night, and I thought I would give it a try. I have been a coffee drinker since early high school, but this week I have stumbled upon a whole new world.
There are few things that I enjoy more than sitting in a quiet place and reading a good book with a hot beverage at my side. I find it remarkably peaceful and energizing.
I often find myself caught between the two extremes of my personality. On the one hand I do love to sit in silence and get lost in a good book for hours or even days. On the other hand I am a very ambitious person who is constantly chasing productivity bordering on workaholic.
These two poles of personality are constantly pulling me in opposite directions. When in harmony, they provide a lovely balance to my life, in which I am very productive and fulfilled at work and filled with peace and relaxation when at home. The problem is that we aren’t always in harmonic balance.
I believe that self-awareness is the key to so many things. Luckily, I have been guided through processes that teach me about myself from seminary and the ordination process. But most of us don’t take the time to learn about ourselves, and how we function unless someone or something forces us to do so.
I don’t know where you find peace and what motivates you, but I hope that you do. It is necessary for us to understand ourselves so that we will notice when our lives fall out of balance. Holiday weekends free from obligation make for good self-reflection time.
I don’t know if it’s books and tea that bring you peace and I don’t know what motivates you to achieve your goals and strive for your dreams, but I pray that you can find the time to meet with God and learn more about the way God created you. We are all made in the divine image of God, but none of us are the same.
Have a wonderful week my friends,
