General Conference begins today and continues untilMay 20th. General Conference is the main legislative body of The United Methodist Church, which gathers every 4 years. This year General Conference is in Portland, Oregon.
General Conference should be very interesting for a number of reasons. I’m personally very engaged because my sister, Kelly Carpenter, is a delegate from our conference this year. There are also many significant pieces of legislation coming before the delegates, almost 900 of them, in Portland. These legislative items include restructuring proposals, clergy matters, a new hymnal, and budgeting, but the items getting the most press are the ones regarding the social principles of The United Methodist Church, especially the ones dealing with human sexuality. You can read more about the legislative agenda by clicking HERE.
I ask that you join in praying for the delegates that have gathered in Portland. There will be protests, there will be angry debates and many people will walk away from this conference elated while others will be devastated. I ask that you pray for peace and love to prevail. I pray that delegates will treat each other with love and respect especially when dealing with cultural and language differences.
If you are interested in praying for our conference’s delegates by name, here is that list:
