I was with our Jr. High youth on mission trip last week, and it was fantastic! I love going on mission trip with our youth, but our recent Jr. High trips have been especially significant for me because our church has attended Reaching Others Through Christ (ROTC) this summer and last year.
I’ve been working with ROTC for almost 10 years now, and for the past few years my sister and I have taken over as the Executive Directors. Working with my sister has been such a wonderful joy, and made even better thanks to the quality of this organization.
ROTC is a mission organization in which Jr. High students travel to small towns all over Texas each summer and construct wheelchair ramps for members of those communities that are in need, at no cost to them. Worship at ROTC is designed to expose Jr. High students to different elements of worship and open their eyes to all that God has to offer them as well as all that God can do through them.
This past week we were in Brownwood, Texas and had a really wonderful camp, although it was a little crazy! We had to redesign a couple of the ramps on the last day due to some property line confusions with the city. To give you an idea of the changes needed this is what one site looked like on Friday morning after the team worked for 3 days:
And this is what it looked like at the end of that same day:
In the 13 years ROTC has existed, building over 200 ramps, we have never had to completely rebuild a ramp in one day. I led worship all week, and wasn’t on a work team, but on Friday we needed all extra hands on deck, so I got to go out and work on this ramp redesign all day. It was quite an adventure!
The message we discussed on Thursday night at camp was: “God is Big Enough.” We talked about how God is big enough to handle anything. God forgives us even when we walk away. God can handle our worries and can bring comfort in the midst of crisis. God can even make it possible for a group of Jr. High to completely rebuild a ramp in one day.
God is big enough.
God is big enough for whatever you are experiencing. God is big enough to hold the entire world and still breathe life and hope into the nuanced situations we find ourselves in each day.
Our Jr. High are incredible, and God moved in a powerful way last week. I hope you know the love and peace of God, and are comforted knowing that God is big enough to handle anything and will be with you through whatever may come your way.
In case you haven’t heard, I am teaching a new series of mini-courses starting next month called Seminary Abridged. All of the courses are 2-4 weeks long, free and open to anyone! You can sign up for as many as you’d like; just 1 or 2 or all 12! You can learn more about the topics we will be covering and register online by clicking HERE.
You can also register by calling or visiting our church office or in the Narthex. I really hope you will join me in this study!
Have a wonderful week my friends,
