Today is Mardi Gras, which means that Lent begins tomorrow! I hope you are attending our Fat Tuesday Fish Fry tonight, and if you haven’t sent in your RSVP for tonight, then call the church office pronto!
I can’t believe that tomorrow is the beginning of Lent. I have to admit that we are still putting the last few Christmas decorations into storage. Yesterday our staff was discussing the Easter schedule, which just reminded me that things never really slow down in the life of a church.
It is for this reason, among many, that I am thankful for Lent. While things don’t slow down during Lent, it is a season in the church specifically designed for introspection, meditation and preparation. Many people take up a spiritual practice during Lent, or give up a vice for these 40 days.
I am thankful for such a long time to carefully study one of the Gospels. As a church, we are going to study the Gospel of Luke during Lent. We handed out a bookmark on Sunday with the reading schedule for those who want to read along with us, and I hope you will! If you didn’t get a bookmark, don’t worry, we will have plenty of extras at worship. The reading for this week is Luke 1-3.
I am thankful for this study because I feel like we often bounce around the Bible. From one week to the next or sometimes even from one service to the next we are studying different parts of the Bible. So I am thankful for this change of pace, where we can take an entire Gospel and really study it for almost two months.
I hope you are eating king cake today and fried fish with us tonight. I hope you are celebrating this day before we don ashes tomorrow and begin the 40-day journey to the resurrection of our Lord and savior.
Tomorrow morning, we will have “ashes-to-go!” here at our church and in front of Jaynes Memorial Chapel on Cockrell Hill Road from 6-8am with free coffee and donuts! I will be in our chapel from 12-1pm for anyone who wants to come get their ashes during their lunch break, and then we will have a full Ash Wednesday worship service tomorrow evening at 7pm in our Sanctuary.
I hope you will join us tomorrow as we begin this holy season.
Have a wonderful week my friends!
